NILD Canada equips educators by offering master level courses, workshops, and in-service professional development for schools – all grounded in best practice research. These educators and alumni are making an impact in the lives of students across the country and around the world.

Our Mission

To train and equip educators, therapists and parents to support students that learn differently through courses, workshops, seminars and webinars.

Our Vision

To be the source of best practice educational solutions for helping students with learning differences.

Our History

The NILD Educational Therapy model was developed in the 1960s by Deborah Zimmerman, a nurse and educator. Many of the educational techniques she developed were shaped by her work with early pioneers in the field of learning disabilities such as Archie Silver, M.D. and Rosa Hagin, Ph.D. The program was founded by Grace Mutzabaugh in Norfolk, Virginia in 1973. Because of these two women’s faithful pursuit of help for struggling learners, a wave of hope now literally encircles the globe.

Their convictions have stood the test of time. The brain can change!

NILD Educational Therapy was introduced to Canadian teachers in the late 1980’s. Training was brought to Canada in 1993 by Trix Bradley and the Canadian steering committee.

In 2002, NILD Canada became an affiliate of NILD and we now train therapists in all three levels of NILD Educational Therapy, provide conferences, and administers the registration and licensing of all Canadian therapists. A regional office was established in Waterloo in 2003 and in 2015 we were granted status as a Canadian Charitable Organization.

Non-Profit Organization

In 2015, NILD Canada was registered and approved by Canada Revenue Agency as an official Charitable Organization.

As a non-profit organization, NILD Canada strives to serve students across Canada, by training therapists and educators to understand learning differences and to provide best practice intervention. Your tax-deductible gifts will assist NILD Canada in its efforts to reach struggling learners and release them from the confines of their learning disabilities.

More than 100,000 children around the world have been through and benefited from NILD’s program in the past 40 years! David Hinshaw was one of the first. He struggled with a learning disability in elementary school and says:

“Two years of NILD Educational Therapy trained me to think critically and prepared me for success today in the global arena of communications technology sales. NILD changed my life!”
